Stavropol is located in the south of Russia, 1,404 km south of Moscow. It is a cultural, business and industrial center of the region. It is one of the largest cities in the North Caucasus.

The city's area is 242 sq. km. Stavropol lies on the 45th parallel (which is equidistant from the North Pole and the Equator). One of the streets of the city carries the name 45-I, reflective of this distinction.
